Mallorca: nearly €5m for Alcanada clean-up at risk

Mallorca’s town of Alcúdia could lose nearly €5 million in European Union funding to clean polluted land at the old Alcanada power station: the Socialist party says the work has not begun. On Monday, 2 November, the PSIB accused the Mallorca Island Council and the Balearic government of failing to move the project forward.

The clean-up that has not started

The island council bought the former power station site in the previous legislative term. Plans called for it to become a centre for innovation and the blue and green economy. Catalina Cladera, the Socialists’ spokesperson on the council, said nearly €5 million had been secured for cleaning up the land but no steps had been taken to do the work.

Cladera also criticised the lack of progress on a planned regatta canal and a training centre for nautical trades. She said funding for the Alcanada clean-up was now at risk.

Questions over more EU funding

Socialist member of the Balearic parliament Carles Bona wants the government to explain what will happen to more than €3 million from the European Union’s Just Transition Fund. He said the government had acknowledged it could not spend that money as planned. The fund is intended in part for work at Alcanada and the gradual dismantling of the Es Murterar power station. The Socialists want to know which projects are affected and where the money would go instead.

The party plans to bring a motion before Alcúdia’s council on 12 November, calling for guarantees that the EU-funded projects will go ahead and for checks on the promised work. For now, the future of the funding remains unclear.
