Mallorca man faces 12 years over alleged bed chaining

A man accused of chaining his partner to a bed in Mallorca faces a demand for 12 years in prison at a preliminary hearing in Palma at 09.45 on Monday. Prosecutors say his mother helped to hold and mistreat the woman, and are seeking eight years for her. Two other defendants each face three years over their alleged part in extortion.

The Second Section of the Balearic Islands Provincial Court will hear the case. Prosecutors accuse the man of two counts of extortion, unlawful detention, repeated abuse and breaching a protective order.

Protective order and alleged abuse

The alleged violence began between December 2024 and May 2025 in Valencia and Mallorca, according to the prosecution. The man had already been convicted three times for abusing or threatening his partner, prosecutors say.

A court dealing with violence against women in Alzira issued a protection order for the woman in April 2025 and banned him from approaching her. Prosecutors say he nevertheless persuaded her to move to Mallorca, where the alleged abuse continued.

The indictment says the man and his mother repeatedly assaulted her, using punches as well as cables, belts and knives. It also alleges that he took her mobile phone to stop her keeping regular contact with family or friends.

When she tried to escape, prosecutors say the pair held her, cut her hair to humiliate her and chained her to a bed.

Car and house in alleged coercion

To get free, the woman was allegedly forced to give her vehicle to her mother-in-law. Prosecutors say she was also made to give a third defendant special power of attorney to sell her house to the fourth accused.

The woman escaped while her partner was in Valencia to carry out that sale, according to the prosecution, and left for mainland Spain. She returned to Mallorca in August 2025, when the man allegedly intimidated her again.
