Mallorca’s capital, Palma, takes centre stage in Spain’s election campaign: Madrid mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida says its administration could be a model for Alberto Núñez Feijóo if the People’s Party (PP) leader takes power. Almeida makes the claim in Palma on 6 November as he backs the party’s Balearic candidates for the 29 November parliamentary election.

Why Almeida points to Palma

Almeida says Palma works well and provides good public services. He also praises the Balearic government led by Marga Prohens, arguing that it has shown it can tackle problems including housing, healthcare and education. His comments are a campaign endorsement, not an announcement of government plans.

What Balearic mayors want

At a separate party event, PP mayors and local election candidates set out what they want from the next Spanish government. Their priorities include affordable housing, better public services, investment in water infrastructure and action against unauthorised tourist businesses.

Balearic PP spokesman Jaume Ferriol also calls for fair funding for the islands and investment to offset the costs of being an island region. The local representatives back the party’s candidates for Spain’s Congress and Senate, saying the islands need people in Madrid who understand their towns’ concerns.
