€2,818,070 for rare diseases and ALS is on the table in Madrid, Spain, on Friday, 23 October, as health officials discuss how to divide the money among the country’s autonomous communities. The Interterritorial Council of the National Health System will also review its 2026 rare diseases strategy and consider common rules for reporting waiting lists. The funding proposal covers rare and neurodegenerative diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, known as ELA in Spanish).

Plasma and prevention funding

The council’s agenda, seen by Europa Press, proposes €2 million to improve supplies of human plasma. A further €5 million would go towards monitoring systems and equipment for plasma donation units.

Officials will also consider €3 million for health protection and prevention, including anti-smoking plans and monitoring of screening programmes. Another €7 million is proposed for systems tracking cancer, rare diseases, mental health and other health issues.

Menorca declaration on the agenda

The council will consider joining the Menorca Declaration, named for Menorca in the Balearic Islands. It concerns emotional wellbeing and mental health protection for migrant children and teenagers. The agenda sets out a proposed decision, not an agreement already reached.

Officials will also review recommendations for moving patients with chronic illnesses from paediatric to adult care, and criteria for assigning patients to proton therapy. Those decisions sit among 27 items on Friday’s agenda.
