Ibiza councils pressed to reveal animal emergency plans
On the island of Ibiza, two councils face demands to say who would get animals to safety in an emergency and where they would stay. On 1 October, animal welfare party Pacma called on Eivissa and Santa Eulària des Riu councils to publish their plans, with unsettled weather forecast for the Pityusic Islands.
Pacma wants to know who would evacuate animals, how they would be moved, where they would be sheltered and what veterinary care would be available. It says the plans must also cover cats cared for by the community.
Emergency plans must include measures to protect animals, Pacma says, citing the law and the Basic Civil Protection Standard. Santa Eulària des Riu’s municipal emergency plan was approved by the Balearic government on 20 April, but Pacma wants the council to explain its procedures for animals.
The party is asking both councils to name people who can be reached in an emergency, set out how they would work with animal welfare groups and strengthen any inadequate procedures. It says volunteers should not be left to decide what to do when a flood comes.
