Palma probes alleged illegal animal transport

Palma City Council is looking into a claim that live and dead animals were carried in the same vehicle. The UGT union has lodged a complaint against the council and its contractor, Athisa, with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment. The allegation was made on Thursday, 10 September.

The council says mixing the two types of animal transport in one vehicle is illegal. It insists that, if it happened, it would have been an exceptional, isolated case and not part of normal practice at Son Reus.

Son Reus has a contract with Athisa that requires live and dead animals to be transported separately. The council says the two journeys must never be combined in the same vehicle.

Son Reus management will ask Athisa to explain the precise circumstances in which the alleged breach may have happened. If the claim is confirmed, the applicable sanctions will be considered.
