Mallorca children bring anti-violence message to Artà shops
Mallorca’s island council honours Artà on Friday, 2 October, for a project that takes children’s messages against violence against women from schools into local shops. The award recognises work that began in 2024 and now reaches families, businesses and the wider town.
Pupils in Artà first gathered the gestures, words and attitudes that make them feel well treated. Their contributions became a public exhibition and then a shared mural.
In 2025, schools used keys and keyrings to carry the message forward: treating people well means closing the door on mistreatment. The pupils’ work was shared at a community meeting before going to shops around Artà. Schools also received materials to continue the work in class.
The project is called Abre la puerta al buen trato — “Open the door to good treatment”. It is the second good-practice award from the Mallorcan Institute of Social Affairs, after a July award for a campaign against sexism by the Pla de Mallorca association of municipalities.
Institute president Guillermo Sánchez says involving children and teenagers helps the message reach families, schools and shops. Artà’s mayor, Manuel Galán, says treating people well is a shared responsibility.
