Aqualia water deal stalls in Mallorca's Sóller

A planned five-year extension to Aqualia’s water contract in Sóller, Mallorca, has failed to move forward. On 10 September, the local PSIB called on mayor Miquel Nadal to bring water management back into public hands. The socialists welcomed the halt to the proposed extension.

The water service is privately managed until 2030, according to the PSIB. Sóller’s municipal government had sought to add another five years to Aqualia’s concession, but the PP stood alone in the vote, the party said.

PSIB secretary-general in Sóller, Jaume Mateu, said he could not understand the PP’s “obsession” with the concession. He called on Nadal to explain the interests behind the attempt to lengthen the contract.

The party wants a public, transparent and sustainable model for the town’s water. Mateu said control of the supply was particularly important amid climate change, tourist pressure and the need to guarantee water supply. He also said the vote exposed the weakness of the minority municipal administration, which he accused of putting private and economic interests before the wider public interest.
