Mallorca election: Armengol challenges Feijóo on feminism
In s'Arenal de Llucmajor, Mallorca, Francina Armengol urges women to mobilise for Spain’s 29 November general election and challenges Alberto Núñez Feijóo over his claim to be a feminist. The Socialist candidate for the Balearic Islands speaks on Saturday morning at an event organised by the Socialist Federation of Mallorca. She says the leader of the conservative People’s Party (PP) cannot make that claim while seeking to abolish Spain’s Equality Ministry.
Feijóo had told Cadena SER that he grew up in a home with many more women than men. Asked whether he considered himself a feminist, he replied that he believed women and men should have the same rights. Armengol, who is also president of Spain’s Congress of Deputies, argues that his party’s actions tell a different story. According to a statement from her party, the PSIB, she accuses the PP of making deals with Vox, which she says denies violence against women and equality.
Armengol says women’s rights are a central issue in the election. She points to specific protections for hotel room cleaners introduced while she led the Balearic government, and argues that PP-led governments in the Balearic Islands and Mallorca have neglected progress on equality at work.
The event also turns to daily pressures on the island. Trade unions and civic groups discuss food prices, getting around Mallorca and tourism saturation, while housing access is raised separately. Armengol’s appeal is for women to campaign actively before the 29 November vote.
