Spain probes auto-focus glasses over road safety claim

Madrid, 21 October: Spain is investigating auto-focus glasses sold online with a promise to correct different sight problems without a personal eye test. The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices opened the inquiry after the General Council of Colleges of Opticians and Optometrists flagged the product. The agency is checking the glasses and whether their sale and advertising meet the rules.

Sold as ‘Gafas Progresivas Inteligentes de Titanio - Enfoque Automático y Fotocromático’, the glasses are advertised as correcting different sight defects without an individual assessment. The advertising also claimed they met Spanish transport ministry road safety standards. Spain’s General Secretariat for Land Transport says it has no certificate, approval, authorisation or official statement supporting that claim. It plans to pass the case to the Directorate-General for Traffic to consider the road safety issues.

Spain’s Directorate-General for Consumer Affairs has referred the matter to the Ministry of Health because the complaint concerns advertising for a product presented as correcting sight. The investigations are still under way; no breach has been established.

Council president Andrés Gené Sampedro warns that different sight problems need an individual assessment. The wrong correction could blur vision or cause discomfort, he says. Behind the wheel, those problems could make it harder to spot obstacles and signs or react to the unexpected.
