Spain autumn heat: 100-plus stations top 35°C

More than 100 weather stations across Spain topped 35°C on Wednesday 23 September, the day astronomical autumn began. The Guadiana and Guadalquivir valleys came close to 40°C, with Montoro in Córdoba reaching 39°C. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, said the readings belonged to the hottest part of summer rather than the start of autumn.

AEMET says it is very likely that October, November and December will be warmer than normal across much of the Iberian Peninsula. It puts the chance of a warmer-than-normal quarter at 70%, falling to 60% in the south-west of the peninsula.

The rainfall picture is less certain for Mallorca. AEMET sees no clear trend for the rest of Spain, while northern, central and western parts of the peninsula have a 50% chance of a wetter quarter. In the north-west, that chance rises to 70%.
