Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Three people are arrested over the suspected theft of a tourist’s backpack at Playa de Palma, Mallorca, on Monday. At 16.50, a witness stops a Palma Local Police patrol on Carretera del Arenal and points out the group as they leave the beach. She says one took the bag from the sand while the other two distracted the tourist.

The officers approach the three, who pick up speed and split up. Police stop them and find the backpack with one of them. Inside are a mobile phone, 180 euros in cash, clothes and other personal belongings.

The tourist arrives and identifies his things. He says he noticed the theft but could not catch the people who ran off.

None of the three has identification, and two say they are underage. Police take them to the National Police for identification. The two minors are then placed in the care of their protection centre and referred to the juvenile prosecutor’s office. The third person, an 18-year-old man, remains in National Police custody.
