Mallorca strike row: union disputes minimum cover
Palma, Mallorca: a dispute over essential service cover hangs over a general strike on 11 November in the Balearic Islands’ regional administration. On Saturday, 7 November, the Comisiones Obreras union (CCOO) accused the Balearic Islands government of failing to reach an agreement on minimum service levels.
Those minimum levels determine which essential services continue during the strike. CCOO says they should cover only services the public cannot do without, not reduce the effect of the walkout. The government must keep essential services running while respecting workers’ right to strike, the union says. It wants cover set using objective, justified and proportionate criteria.
CCOO is urging workers to join the strike. It is calling for decent pay, affordable housing, better working conditions, strong public services and a fairer distribution of wealth.
