In Palma, Mallorca, on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, a stark figure fuels a row over the Balearic Islands’ hospital A&Es: they have already recorded 6,000 more serious emergency cases this year than in all of 2023. But health minister Manuela García says the departments are not overwhelmed. She says demand has risen while waiting times have held steady.

García was answering questions in the regional parliament from Joana Gomila of Més per Menorca and Irantzu Fernández of the Socialist Party of the Balearic Islands (PSIB). She accused the PSIB of treating isolated incidents as though they were typical. Gomila said waiting lists had not fallen for specialist appointments or operations across many departments at Menorca’s Mateu Orfila Hospital.

García pointed to rising demand, a nationwide doctors’ strike and a shortage of health professionals. She said her aim was to cut waiting times, adding that she would not be satisfied while a patient had to wait for care.
