Balearic airport cuts spark row over holiday lets

Palma, Mallorca: a demand for cuts at airports across the Balearic Islands sparks a row on Monday, 26 October. Spain’s transport minister, Óscar Puente, accuses the Balearic government of hypocrisy for seeking airport cuts while holiday-let licences continue to be granted. Balearic tourism minister Jaume Bauzá rejects the criticism, saying the number of tourist accommodation places on the islands is already limited.

Speaking at a Nueva Economía Fórum event, Puente argues that the way to manage tourist numbers is to control accommodation, not limit airport capacity. Airport operator Aena cannot choose who uses its airports, he says, but it can size them for the number of passengers it expects.

Bauzá says Puente can say what he likes. He calls for the Balearic government to have a vote and a voice at Aena, so it can have a say in how the islands’ airports are run.
