Balearic election: Més alliance faces Monday cutoff

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

In Spain’s Balearic Islands, Més and Frente Amplio face a deadline: they have until midnight on Monday 26 October to file candidates for the 29 November general election. Parties, alliances and voter groups can submit lists for Congress and the Senate from Wednesday 21 October. The Més–Frente Amplio alliance has registered with a provincial electoral board to contest a single constituency.

New rules for the lists

For the first time in a general election, parties must place women and men alternately on their Congress candidate lists. Parties and alliances that won no seat in either chamber at the previous general election must also collect signatures from at least 0.1% of registered voters in each constituency where they stand.

Nine other electoral alliances have registered with the Central Electoral Board. The Més–Frente Amplio arrangement is filed separately with a provincial board because it covers just one constituency.

When the names become final

The Spanish official gazette, the Boletín Oficial del Estado, will publish the submitted lists on Wednesday 28 October. That is not the final line-up. Provincial electoral boards then have two days to flag problems, and parties have 48 hours from notification to put them right.

The boards have until Monday 2 November to confirm the candidates. The confirmed lists are due in the gazette the next day, Tuesday 3 November.
