In the Balearic Islands, Ara Més, Sumar and Izquierda Unida agree to stand together in Spain’s general election, leaving Podemos out for now. Friday 16 October is the last day to register election coalitions.

Podemos could still join the Balearic pact if it signs up to Frente Amplio, according to sources in Ara Més. For voters on Mallorca and across the islands, the question is whether that happens before the deadline.

The split goes beyond the Balearics. In Madrid, people involved in the talks see little prospect of Frente Amplio and Podemos agreeing a joint list. Podemos leader Ione Belarra wants deals in many regions but excludes Madrid and Catalonia. Izquierda Unida rejects separate regional deals and wants an agreement across the country.

The two parties have found common ground in the Canary Islands, where they plan to stand alongside Sumar and Nueva Canarias. In Aragón, a left-wing coalition has also formed without Podemos, though Chunta Aragonesista has asked it to join.
