Balearic EU funds face a spend-or-lose deadline

EU funds in the Balearic Islands come with a deadline: miss it, and the unused share is no longer paid. The Balearic government has joined officials from across Spain at a forum in Melilla, Spain, to review how programmes for 2021–2027 are progressing. The regional department for economy, finance and innovation reported the talks on 30 October 2026.

Among the issues discussed was the EU’s “n+3” rule. Allocated funds must be used in the designated year or one of the next three years; otherwise, the unused share is no longer paid out. Officials also examined spending plans, management checks and audits.

The forum considered how to measure the effectiveness of funded projects and show the public the results of investments co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund. It ended with a call for stronger co-operation between administrations as they look towards challenges beyond 2027. The department gave no spending figures or project results for the Balearic Islands.
