Balearic ferry links face a growing rule divide

Balearic ferry links could become harder to run under a growing patchwork of rules, Trasmed warned in Madrid on 23 September 2026. The Grimaldi Group company, which specialises in sea connections between the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, wants the International Maritime Organization’s global framework to take priority. It says local, regional and supranational requirements are multiplying across the shipping sector.

Miguel Pardo, Trasmed’s director of institutional relations, said shipping operates in a global market. “It is difficult to regulate locally without creating distortions to competition,” he said.

World Maritime Day falls on 24 September under the organisation’s theme, “From policy to practice: driving maritime excellence”. Trasmed points to the United Nations body’s role in safety, efficiency and environmental sustainability across global shipping.

The company also backs the United Nations 2030 Agenda, including infrastructure innovation, climate action and protecting life below water. It says maritime connections also affect territorial cohesion and the socio-economic development of island communities.
