Balearic funding row: €412m a year at stake in 2027

Mallorca and the rest of the Balearic Islands could miss out on an estimated €412 million a year in 2027 if their government blocks Spain’s new regional funding plan, the PSOE warns. In Madrid on 29 September, the People’s Party (PP), Vox and the Canary Coalition voted down a PSOE motion urging Balearic president Marga Prohens and Canary Islands president Fernando Clavijo to support the plan and suggest improvements. The vote defeated a non-binding motion, not the funding plan itself.

The motion went before a joint Congress and Senate committee on island affairs. It asked both island governments to work on the new model rather than block it. The PSOE estimates that, compared with the current system, the Canary Islands could miss out on €611 million a year in extra funding in 2027 if the plan is blocked.

Filed in May 2026, the motion also called for work on the plan to continue through the Council for Fiscal and Financial Policy and talks with Spain’s regional governments. The council endorsed the government’s proposal in early September, with only Catalonia and the Canary Islands voting in favour.
