Balearic general strike: no deal on essential services

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Mallorca heads towards the 11 November general strike with no deal on essential cover in the Balearic Islands’ administration. The Balearic Islands’ government and unions have failed to agree on minimum services — the essential work to be maintained during the walkout. The CCOO union reported the failed talks in Palma, Mallorca, on 4 November.

CCOO says those services must protect essential provision without stopping staff from exercising their right to strike. It warns that minimum services must not be used to blunt the walkout’s impact or keep workers from taking part. The union wants the government to use objective, proportionate criteria when setting the cover and to respect the legal right to strike.
