€887m deficit: Balearic Islands budget worsens
The Balearic Islands ended June with an €887 million budget deficit, equal to 1.78% of their gross domestic product (GDP). Spain’s Ministry of Finance released the figures on Friday, 11 September. The shortfall was higher than in the first half of 2025, when the Balearic administration recorded a €607 million deficit, or 1.28% of GDP.
Across Spain, the autonomous communities together posted a €17,287 million deficit by the end of June, equivalent to 0.97% of GDP. That was up 10.9% in cash terms from €15,588 million, or 0.92% of GDP, over the same period in 2025. The Basque Country was the only autonomous community to report a budget surplus.
Spain’s Social Security system moved the other way. Between January and July, it recorded a positive balance of €9,162 million after taking in €154,231 million and spending €145,069 million, according to the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration.
