Balearic Islands poverty risk falls to 15.2% in 2025
Across Mallorca and the rest of Spain’s Balearic Islands, 15.2% of people face poverty or social exclusion in Eurostat’s 2025 figures — one percentage point fewer than a year earlier. The share is 6.3 percentage points lower than ten years earlier. It is also below the European Union rate of 20.9%.
Among Spain’s lowest rates
Only the Basque Country has a lower rate in Spain, at 14.7%. Navarre follows the Balearic Islands at 16.5%. At the other end, the Spanish cities of Melilla and Ceuta record rates of 43.7% and 40.8%. Both rank among the ten highest-rate regions in the European Union.
What the figure means
Eurostat counts people as at risk if they meet any one of three conditions: their disposable income is below 60% of the national median, they face severe material and social deprivation, or they live in a household with very little work.
The statistics office says living costs across the European Union have risen since late 2021. Higher rents, property prices and mortgage costs have made housing less affordable, while changing energy prices continue to put pressure on household budgets.
