Balearic Islands housing warning and €1,500 pay demand
The Balearic Islands are among the places named in a warning about the cost of taking a public-sector job: trade union CCOO says some successful applicants turn down posts because they cannot afford housing. In Madrid on Friday, 2 October, the union calls for a minimum salary of 1,500 euros for public employees, higher pay and more jobs.
CCOO says other applicants rent expensive rooms or even live in their vehicles. Its warning also names Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga and the Canary Islands. The union does not say how many people face these problems in the Balearic Islands or identify Mallorca separately.
The union wants pay rises that keep pace with living costs, covering both basic salaries and additional payments. It also wants employees to receive their extra payments in full again.
CCOO calls for fewer jobs to be kept on temporary contracts, the return of lost posts and the recruitment of younger staff. It wants hiring planned around staffing needs rather than the current replacement-rate rule. Many of its demands are already covered by agreements with the government, it says, and should not be delayed further.
