Balearic Islands weather: thunderstorms and strong gusts possible

Spain’s Civil Protection authority said on Tuesday, 18 August, that thunderstorms in south-eastern mainland Spain on Thursday could bring very strong gusts to the Balearic Islands. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency expects rain across the archipelago on Friday.

The notice does not issue a specific severe-weather warning for Mallorca or any other individual Balearic island. Civil Protection has urged people to follow updates because thunderstorms can be difficult to forecast precisely.

Front expected to bring cooler weather

A slow-moving front is due to arrive in north-western mainland Spain on Thursday, bringing rain to the Cantabrian area and possibly to much of the northern half of the peninsula. Afternoon thunderstorms are also possible.

The system is expected to cause a general fall in temperatures, with a particularly marked drop in parts of northern mainland Spain. On Friday, rain is forecast to continue in the Cantabrian area, north-eastern mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, though it should be more scattered than on Thursday.

Civil Protection advice for heavy rain

Drivers should slow down, take extra care and avoid stopping where large volumes of water may flow. Where travel is necessary, Civil Protection recommends using main roads and motorways.

People should not cross flooded stretches on foot or by vehicle, and should move to higher ground if water levels rise quickly. The authority also advises against trying to recover a car during flooding.
