Balearic jobs rise, but staff still live in caravans

In the Balearic Islands, hospitality workers have to live in caravans or share rooms even as more people register for social security, union leader Pedro Homar says. Speaking on 4 November about October’s employment figures, the head of UGT in the Balearic Islands says the rise has not made workers’ lives easier.

Homar says the end of the tourist season exposes an unstable jobs market. He argues that economic gains are not being shared fairly, particularly on the islands, where housing is hard to access and living costs are high.

Trade unions plan a general strike on 11 November. Homar says it could mark a turning point.
