49 Balearic nursery jobs: union calls for Riera to quit
Palma, Mallorca: A row over 49 new nursery education jobs across the Balearic Islands prompts the STEI union to demand Neus Riera’s resignation on 2 October. Riera is the Balearic Government’s director-general for early childhood education. STEI says the posts have not been filled for the whole 2026–2027 school year.
Riera was due to explain the appointments to staff representatives this week. According to STEI, the staff will instead be appointed for nine months and stop working on 1 June, or earlier if they take holiday. The union says Riera submitted a written explanation rather than appearing before the representatives.
STEI alleges the posts had no funding allocated when staff were called up. It disputes Riera’s account of how pay is structured and says her letter wrongly describes the workers as permanent staff when they are temporary. The union also claims the department will pay one and a half times an early childhood teacher’s salary for each post it says was mishandled. It says the consequences reach families, children, staff and nursery centres.
