Balearic shop sales fall 5.3% as retail jobs rise
Mallorca and the rest of the Balearic Islands, Spain, see retail sales fall 5.3% in September compared with a year earlier — the sharpest drop of any Spanish region. Yet retail employment across the islands rises 2.8%, the biggest year-on-year increase in Spain. The Spanish National Statistics Institute released the figures on Thursday, 29 October.
Across Spain, retail sales fall 1.6% from a year earlier, their biggest decline since November 2022. Sales have now been down year on year for three months running.
After adjusting for seasonal and calendar effects, Spanish retail sales fall 1.4% compared with September 2025 and 0.4% compared with August. The split between sales and jobs extends beyond the islands: retail employment across Spain rises 0.8% from a year earlier.
