Balearic school heat: union reports teacher fainting
Palma, Mallorca: a union says some Balearic classrooms reach 30 degrees and reports that a teacher has fainted. The education branch of UGT raised the alarm on 3 October but did not say where the teacher fainted. It is calling on the Balearic regional government to fund urgent cooling in schools.
Some teachers say they work in temperatures above 30 degrees and humidity above 80 per cent, according to UGT. The union says the heat makes lessons harder and affects pupils’ learning and teachers’ working conditions.
UGT wants an investment plan with a timetable, a budget and specific measures. It is calling for air conditioning in every classroom as a first step, alongside better building insulation and more shade.
In June 2025, the union proposed using 21 million euros from a language-choice plan to cool schools. It later argued that families and staff should not have to pay for fans or other equipment themselves. UGT welcomes the regional government’s cooling plan, but says it is being put into effect too slowly.
