Balearic schools: 20 more air-con reviews in November
In Palma, Mallorca, the Balearic Islands’ education department plans to assess 20 more schools for air conditioning in November. It has already reviewed 20. Education and Universities Minister Antoni Vera gave the figures to the Balearic Parliament on Tuesday, 27 October.
Socialist member Amanda Fernández challenged him over the timetable. She recalled that Vera had said in August 2023 that an air-conditioning plan was nearly ready. Yet last week, she said, the regional president spoke of having an investment plan before the end of the parliamentary term so work could begin.
Vera said the Fueib was assessing the remaining schools, which have different needs. Schools put out to tender and opened during this parliamentary term already have air conditioning, he said, while work at other schools has gone ahead alongside the assessments.
He blamed the slow pace on problems inherited by the government. If the choice is between propping up a roof and installing air conditioning, Vera said, the roof comes first.
