MÉS seeks legal definition of the Balearic Sea

MÉS per Mallorca submitted initiatives to the Congress of Deputies and the Balearic Parliament in Palma, Mallorca, on 19 August 2026, calling for a legal and geographical definition of the Balearic Sea. The party also wants coordinated, comprehensive management of the maritime area surrounding the archipelago.

Call for coordinated maritime planning

Vicenç Vidal, the Sumar-MÉS member of the Congress of Deputies, said the sea should no longer be administered through separate fragmented jurisdictions. He called for policies to reflect the ecosystem’s distinct territorial, environmental and economic conditions.

Vidal noted that the Balearic Parliament had already sought a new boundary for internal and external waters in 2020. He said a clear definition would support joined-up planning for conservation, fishing, biodiversity, navigation and climate-change adaptation.

Posidonia anniversary and protected areas

The initiatives coincide with the eighth anniversary of the Posidonia oceanica conservation decree, which was approved while Vidal was Balearic environment minister.

He also highlighted proposals made by Oceana, including protection for 30 per cent of the Balearic Sea and the creation of a network of marine protected areas.
