Across Mallorca and the rest of the Balearic Islands, unemployment rises 3.27% in September compared with August. It is also 1.89% higher than in September 2025. Trade union CCOO says the figures show the usual end-of-season pattern, but warns that the year-on-year rise points to a labour market that is stagnating.

There is a brighter figure alongside it: 682,486 people are registered with Social Security, 29,079 more than in the same month last year, a rise of 4.45%. CCOO says that improvement cannot continue indefinitely. In a statement on 2 October, it called for changes to improve jobs, working conditions and access to housing.

The union also wants the Balearic government to designate the islands as an area with a strained housing market, a step that would allow limits on rents. It warns that an economic downturn could make housing problems worse and fuel discontent. CCOO says the islands’ seasonal economy creates insecure work and does not reliably provide workers with a decent living.
