Balearics electricity grid drops to 47.8% full

The Balearic Islands electricity grid stands 47.8% full at the end of September, putting it among Spain’s least saturated regional networks. The figure has fallen from 86.3% in March, according to a capacity map by Foro Industria y Energía and Opina 360. The map measures how much room remains for new connections to the electricity grid.

Across Spain, the picture is far tighter. Some 86.5% of the country’s electricity substations are already full, the report says. Of 6,127 operating substations, 5,301 have no access capacity left and only 826 — 13.5% — still have space available.

The Spanish grid has lost 282.2 MW of available capacity in six months, dropping from 7,400.8 MW to 7,118.6 MW. While 1,258.6 MW was added in some areas, 1,540.8 MW was taken up elsewhere.

The Basque Country has no available capacity and is 100% saturated. Navarra stands at 99.6%, with 1.9 MW available, while La Rioja is 98.4% saturated with 10.7 MW. Eight provinces, including Málaga, have every substation at capacity.

Juan Francisco Caro, director of Opina 360, said September’s figures did not show the expected release of capacity after the government introduced new rules in March. Article 11 of Royal Decree-law 7/2026 allows Red Eléctrica de España to charge companies that reserve grid access without starting their activity. Caro said the network remained almost as saturated as it was six months earlier, with several regions worsening.
