Balearics push 34 EU changes on island transport
Mallorca’s transport links are part of the case: the Balearic government brings 34 amendments to the European Committee of the Regions in Brussels on Thursday, 15 October. It wants more say in European decisions on affordable island connections, cyber security and democracy. Xesca Ramis, the government’s director general for institutional and parliamentary relations, defended the proposals, according to the Balearic Ministry of the Presidency, Government Coordination and Local Cooperation.
Island links and cyber security
Fifteen amendments call for EU transport plans to take the geography of the islands into account. The government wants more investment, better links to European transport networks and connections that are both sustainable and affordable.
Another 15 amendments address cyber security and digital networks. They seek a stronger role for regional and local authorities in shaping EU decisions, along with better access to information, stable funding and support suited to their capabilities. Most of the transport and cyber security amendments were approved or included in substance in compromise proposals.
Democracy proposals reach the final text
The remaining four amendments concern the European Democracy Shield. They seek to strengthen the rule of law, media freedom and pluralism, and public transparency. All four made it into the final text, either directly or through compromises that carried their main points.
