Balearics miss out on €180m grants, weigh court fight
In Palma, Mallorca, the Balearic government is considering a court challenge over a €180 million Spanish housing grant scheme: the islands do not qualify for the money. On 23 October 2026, government spokesman Antoni Costa said Spain is offering the grants only to regions that have formally designated areas where the housing market is under strain. Balearic government lawyers are examining whether to challenge the decree in court.
Costa said the rule discriminates against regions that have not made such designations, including the Balearics. Speaking after a meeting of the regional government, he said its Department of Housing, Territory and Mobility had raised objections to the draft decree, but the Spanish government had ignored them.
Costa argued that housing grants should depend chiefly on need. He pointed to rent and purchase prices, the share of household income spent on housing, the shortage of homes and population pressure. In his view, the decree fails to address those needs and breaches the principle of equal treatment between regions. No decision to take the case to court has been announced.
