Balearics housing sales drop 15.6% in July

Housing sales across the Balearic Islands fell 15.6% in July, the second-steepest drop among Spain’s regions. The provisional figures were published on Monday by the Colegio de Registradores. They cover the whole archipelago and give no separate figure for Mallorca.

Only Cantabria recorded a sharper fall in home purchases, down 17.6%. Melilla and Asturias each saw a 15.5% decline.

Across Spain, around 60,500 housing purchases were registered in July, a year-on-year fall of 7.7%. Sales of all types of property in the Balearics dropped by 15.4%.

The picture for mortgages was different. Mortgages taken out for homes in the Balearics rose 24.9%, the biggest increase of any Spanish region, even as the total number of new mortgages on the islands fell 15.7%.
