More than 6,600 migrants have reached the Balearic Islands this year: around 100 arrive on the islands’ coasts on Tuesday. On 14 October, regional president Marga Prohens says Spain’s central government has yet to respond to what she calls an “unprecedented migration crisis”.
In a social media post, Prohens calls for more resources to control the borders and tougher action against people-smuggling gangs. She also wants Frontex, the European border agency, deployed permanently on the route to the Balearic Islands, and calls for European rules on returns to be applied.
