Balearics face storms, hail and heavy rain Wednesday

The Balearics could be hit by heavy rain, powerful thunderstorms, hail and intense lightning on Wednesday, Meteored meteorologist José Miguel Viñas says. He has named the islands, Catalonia and south-eastern Spain as the areas to watch. An active Atlantic front is expected to reach the Balearics after crossing the Peninsula.

The front is tied to a deep low-pressure system moving north of the British Isles. Viñas says thunderstorms in the Mediterranean area could be strong to very strong, bringing heavy downpours, hail and significant lightning activity.

Temperatures are also set to fall as the front moves through. Across several parts of Spain, daytime highs could drop by 10 to 12 ºC, and in some places by even more. Values are forecast to fall further in the Balearics on Thursday, as well as along the Mediterranean coast, in the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla.
