On Mallorca and across the rest of Spain’s Balearic Islands, nearly 179,000 people work in hospitality, travel agencies and tour operators in September. That is 4% more than in September 2025, according to figures from Spain’s tourism agency, Turespaña.

Just 8% work for themselves

Almost 165,000 of those workers are employees, while just over 14,000 are self-employed. The self-employed account for 8% of the islands’ workforce in these sectors — the lowest share of any Spanish region. The next lowest shares are in the Canary Islands, at 10.3%, and the Madrid region, at 11.9%.

Travel agency figures need care

Across Spain, the tourism workforce rises by 136,415 from a year earlier to just over three million in September. Travel agencies appear to buck that trend, with 1,351 fewer workers in the figures. But Turespaña says that does not reflect a real loss of jobs: changes to the national classification of economic activities have moved some work previously counted under travel agencies into other categories.
