Balearics get €1.05m for university jobs despite No vote
€1.05 million is set to go to public universities in the Balearics for new teaching posts, although the islands were the only autonomous community to vote against the deal. The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities approved the funding on Friday, 4 September, at the General Conference on University Policy in Madrid. The Balearics’ exact share is €1,058,568.
The money is part of the María Goyri programme, which funds profesores ayudantes doctor — doctoral-level university teaching posts. Across Spain, the ministry has agreed to distribute €149.67 million for the posts.
The ministry said this was the first time Spain’s national government had taken on university teaching salaries in an area normally handled by the autonomous communities.
Universities have already covered 2026 salaries
Spain’s university rectors’ conference, CRUE, welcomed the release of the money. It said public universities had so far advanced the 2026 salaries for the 3,400 lecturers already hired under the scheme.
The Balearic authorities must now pass their allocation on to the public universities under their responsibility. By 2028, the programme aims to bring 5,638 of these posts into public universities across Spain — 70% more than in the 2023-2024 academic year.
The national government will fund 3,400 posts over six years at a cost of more than €900 million. The autonomous communities will pay for another 2,236 posts, contributing a further €600 million.
Wildfires held up the first meeting
The decision had been delayed after several PP-governed communities, including the Balearics, asked at the end of July for the conference to be postponed because of forest fires. Those regions did not take part in the meeting, leaving it without the quorum needed to approve the funding split.
The ministry said the absence delayed the start of the process to send the money to the regions. Friday’s agreement clears that blockage, but universities are still waiting for the regional transfers to reach them.
