Mallorca’s Ballon d’Or trio face favourite Putellas
Mallorca has three players in the running for the women’s Ballon d’Or on Monday: Patri Guijarro, Cata Coll and Mariona Caldentey. France Football will hold the ceremony at the London Palladium Theatre at 21.00. Coll is also nominated for the Yashin Trophy, the award for the best goalkeeper.
Putellas leads the field
Two-time winner Alexia Putellas is the favourite. Last season, she won the Spanish league, Champions League, Spanish Cup and Spanish Super Cup with Barcelona. She has since joined London City Lionesses. Another Ballon d’Or would take her level with Aitana Bonmatí, who won the last three awards but is out of contention after a leg and ankle injury.
Guijarro and Coll were part of that title-winning Barcelona side last season. Caldentey plays for Arsenal.
Coll has another prize in sight
Coll’s rivals for the Yashin Trophy include Chelsea’s Hannah Hampton, who won it last year. Coll goes into the vote having won every title available to Barcelona last season. Both awards will be presented at Monday’s gala.
