Mallorca battery storage plan: 80 megawatt-hours in Palma

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Two planned battery sites in Palma, Mallorca, will have a combined capacity of 80 megawatt-hours, holding electricity to feed into the grid later. On Friday, 6 November 2026, the Balearic Islands’ Council of Government gave the projects strategic industrial status. Government spokesman Antoni Costa identified them as Es Rafal Can Valero 1 and 2, in the Son Valentí industrial estate.

The sites will share the storage capacity equally. EFM Balears Sostenible 04 plans to build them on approximately 1,450 square metres on Tèxtil street, including a planted border. The batteries will operate independently of any electricity-generating installation. Two underground lines, each 550 metres long, will connect them to the Es Rafal substation.

Strategic status means the works and installations will not need municipal licences or the advance notifications normally required. The company must still pay the applicable fees and taxes to Palma City Council before work begins.
