Palma beach theft: two arrests after stolen scooter escape
National Police arrested two young men in Palma, Mallorca, on Sunday over the alleged theft of bathers’ belongings from Peñón beach. Officers said the pair fled on an electric scooter that had been reported stolen.
A patrol from the 091 emergency service was sent to the beach at about 04.30 after bathers reported a theft. One man told officers that, while swimming with a friend, he had noticed someone moving near their possessions in the darkness.
He said he confronted a man who ran off with his belongings. The victim gave chase but was unable to catch him after he left on an electric scooter with another man who appeared to have been waiting nearby.
Phones recovered after police search
Police later found the two suspects on the scooter. On seeing the patrols, the men allegedly took objects from their pockets and threw them into a rocky area.
Officers recovered the items, including two high-end mobile phones belonging to the victims, and returned them. One of the devices was damaged when it hit the ground, although the victims said it had been in perfect condition before the alleged theft.
The scooter was seized after checks showed it had been reported stolen. It is due to be returned to its lawful owner.
