People aged over 80 in Binissalem took centre stage on Sunday as the town's Festa des Vermar held its 72nd Homenatge a la Vellesa, or tribute to older people. The event is part of the 60th Festa des Vermar, which runs from 4 to 27 September. Llorenç Galmés, president of the Consell de Mallorca, attended the ceremony.

Music, giants and a church service

The tribute began with a procession from Binissalem Town Hall to the church of Santa Maria de Robines. The Xeremiers de Binissalem and the giants Jaume and Aina accompanied the route.

Inside the church, a service of honour was held for people from the municipality aged over 80.

Thanks for an older generation

Galmés said the tribute showed respect and gratitude for a generation whose effort and work helped build the Mallorca of today. Caring for older people also meant recognising the experience, values and love of traditions they had passed on, he said.

Traditional performances followed, before those honoured were offered a meal in the covered courtyard of the Escola Graduada.
