Mallorca biomass boiler: non-renewable demand down over 90%

A biomass boiler is now heating the indoor pool at the Balearic Islands Sports Technification Centre (Cteib) in Palma, Mallorca. The 500 kW system includes a 5,000-litre heat-storage tank and is fully operational. On 14 September, the Balearic Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports said its start-up had cut the centre’s demand for non-renewable primary energy by more than 90%.

The new boiler currently warms the indoor pool. In a second phase, it will also heat the 50-metre outdoor pool once that pool is covered.

The centre’s natural-gas boilers will remain in place as back-up during breakdowns or maintenance. Sports director general Joan Antoni Ramonell said the change makes the centre more efficient, sustainable and environmentally friendly, while improving services for athletes.

The installation forms part of the centre’s modernisation project. It was funded through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan with European Next Generation EU money.
