Mallorca protest: Blocus threatens to destroy camp tents
In Mallorca’s capital, Palma, some shops have put wooden boards over their windows ahead of a protest at 19.30 on Friday, 30 October. Blocus Mallorca says it will destroy tents at a housing protest camp in Plaza de España if anyone attacks its demonstrators. The camp is at the same square where Blocus has called its protest.
A threat alongside calls for a peaceful protest
Blocus made the threat in an Instagram statement on Thursday. It also said it did not intend to harm anyone taking part in the housing protest and that both groups were campaigning for the same rights.
In earlier posts, Blocus had rejected violence and vandalism and called on its supporters to behave responsibly. Technology company Goldn Owl examined 10,000 items posted across seven digital platforms and found no evidence that the Blocus network had its own activity in Palma or Eivissa.
Police strengthen plans as shops prepare
The Spanish government’s delegation says no protest has been formally notified to it. It is working with the National Police, who had already planned an operation for the possible protest and have strengthened it after further warnings.
Shopkeepers’ association Afedeco has advised businesses to close by 18.00. Its vice-president, Pedro Miró, said the association had not told shops to board up their windows. He called for the demonstration to take place without violence.
