In Palma, Mallorca, some shops are boarding up their windows ahead of a protest on Friday at 19.30. Blocus Mallorca has called the gathering at Plaça d’Espanya, where a housing protest camp is already in place. The group says it will destroy the camp’s tents if anyone attacks one of its demonstrators.

A threat beside the housing camp

Blocus made the threat in an Instagram statement on Thursday. It also said it had no intention of harming people at the Acampada por la Vivienda camp and respected their right to protest. In earlier posts, the group rejected violence and vandalism.

Shops and police prepare

The Spanish government’s delegation says it has received no formal notification of the gathering. It is working with the National Police to prevent trouble. Police had already planned security measures and strengthened them after further warnings.

The traders’ association Afedeco has advised shops to close at 18.00 on Friday. Some city-centre shops have put wooden boards over their windows. Afedeco vice-president Pedro Miró says the association did not recommend boarding them up; individual traders made that decision themselves.
