Mallorca: Palma shops seek compensation for Blocus closures
Palma on Mallorca: shops closed early on Friday and Saturday for fear that Blocus gatherings could turn violent, leaving traders with losses. On Monday, 2 November, the Mallorca Small and Medium-sized Commerce Association (Pimeco) said it had asked its lawyers to examine how to claim those losses from the people behind the calls for the gatherings. The gatherings had not been formally notified, the association said.
Traders want the losses covered
Pimeco president Carolina Domingo said shops in central Palma should not have to worry about further trouble as Black Friday and Christmas trading approach. She wants the association’s lawyers to find out who called the gatherings and how traders could seek compensation. If minors were behind the calls, she said, their parents should cover the losses.
Streets return to normal
The gatherings ended without serious incidents or significant damage to shops, Pimeco said. It credited police presence and preventive work, and thanked officers, local authorities, firefighters and emergency teams. The association said shopping streets had returned to normal.
Pimeco said it respected the right to peaceful protest, but that no cause justified violence, threats or harm to people or shops.
