Five arrive by boat in Mallorca as Santanyí seeks Frontex
A boat carrying five people reaches Cala Santanyí on Mallorca as the local council calls for more surveillance at sea and help from Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency. The arrival coincides with the latest meeting of Santanyí’s local security board, the council says in a statement reported by Europa Press on 3 November.
The council says boats carrying migrants have repeatedly reached its coast. It wants more resources to respond to the arrivals and has raised the possibility that official recognition of the migration route between Algeria and the Balearic Islands could bring a larger Frontex role in surveillance and security.
That role is not settled. Any involvement by European officers will depend on cooperation arrangements and decisions by the relevant national and European authorities, the council says.
