Balearic boat industry short of specialist workers

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

The Balearic Islands’ boat industry lacks specialist workers: training, port space and ship repairs are all on the table as the islands shape their 2027–2031 industry plan. On Friday 9 October, the Balearic Ministry of Enterprise, Self-Employment and Energy held talks on the maritime sector. The discussion covered the availability of port space and the needs of ship repair and maintenance, but did not establish that space is running out.

Ideas put forward include training in marine trades, shared waste handling at boatyards and electricity connections at berths. None has been agreed.

Friday’s meeting closed a series of 11 industry discussions. The contributions will be reviewed with the relevant government departments on 20 October, followed by a meeting on 21 October to bring together the findings from all 11 sessions.
